Suzuki
Eddy
Markovican, B.Mus. (Hon.) Suzuki Music (primary
accreditation), completed a Bachelor of Music Degree at Monash
University in 2002, majoring in composition and performance. Eddy
has studied harmony, counterpoint, 12-tone serialism, and
Shenkerian analysis with Thomas Reiner. composition with Peter
MacIlwain, classical guitar studies with Jochen Schubert and Ken
Murray. In 2003 Eddy completed an Honours Degree of Bachelor of
Music at Monash University specialising in composition,
specifically process composition. Eddy currently teaches classical
guitar at various locations, working with very young children,
teens and adults. Eddy has completed his primary level training and
accreditation with the Suzuki Talent Education
Association.

Danielle
O'Malley, B. A. (Hon), has been performing since
the age of 7 and teaching for many years. Whilst studying a
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Musical Theatre at Lasalle College of
the Arts in Singapore her roles included, Little Sally
inUrinetown, Nora in Working and Cinderella
inInto the Woods.Her other credits include the cabaret
Regards to Broadway at His Majesty’s Theatre, Rosie
in Cabaret at the prestigious Esplanade Theatre in
Singapore, several characters in the four person cast of I Love
You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, lead roles in Wind
in the Willows/The Reluctant Dragon with the Singapore
lyric opera company and Columbia in The Rocky Horror
Show. Danielle has taught piano and singing in Singapore
and Australia. She joined Music Works Magic in 2009.
Guy Dowsett, B.A.
(Mus), B.Mus. Performance, is a composer and musician whose wide
travels have helped cultivate a unique palette of influences and
sounds. During the last 10 years he has lived and worked as teacher
and musician in many different parts of the world. In Prague he was
resident composer and performer for Krepsko Theatre, where he also
founded and fronted carnivale group Mungo Baby. He has worked as
composer and musical director in circus and theatre projects in
Italy, Sweden, Finland and Germany and performed in festivals all
over Europe. During his university studies at VCA and La Trobe, Guy
was chosen to compose and work with some of Melbourne's most
prestigious instrumental ensembles including Woof! Percussion and
the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his musical career he
has taught private lessons and also worked as a classroom teacher
for schools. In Melbourne Guy taught piano, guitar and voice. Over
the last few years he has developed 'Building Music' workshops for
musicians as well as non-musicians, which have been well-received
and appreciated as compelling, accessible and insightful in their
grasp of music's language, its narrative power, and its intricate
relationship to other art forms. Back to top

Elena Polevaya
studied cello, piano and opera singing in Russia, where she also
attained her Master’s Degrees in Musicology and Music Education at
the Gnessiny Academy of Music in Moscow and taught in specialised
junior and senior music schools. In Australia since 1992, Elena
added to her accomplishments operatic experience with Victoria
State Opera, Opera Australia and Melbourne City Opera (7 principal
roles). She has had TV performance experience (with Channel 7) and
wide concert expertise as a solo soprano. Elena has to her credit a
CD and a DVD recording she made with pianist and composer Phillip
Gelbach at BMW Edge in 2005.Teaching remains her passion, and Elena
has taught a multitude of young musicians in her areas of
expertise, including: AMEB candidates and VCE/IB graduates in
Piano, Cello, Music craft and Classical voice. Several of her vocal
students attained various accolades at Victorian Eisteddfods and
continue professional studies here and overseas. Elena's approach
to music education is holistic and inclusive. She is a qualified
Suzuki piano teacher and admits students from the age of 5 who want
to experience the joy of music and make it part of their
lives.Apart from teaching the piano at MWM, Elena is very busy
teaching at her home studio and at a primary school and a secondary
college. Elena enjoys music making in the ensemble setting; many
young instrumentalists at MWM have been supported by Elena’s expert
accompaniment during the Studio's regular concerts.
Piano
Claire Madden B.
Mus./B. Teach. (primary). With over seven years teaching piano both
privately and through schools Claire has a wealth of experience to
draw upon. She graduated from the University of Melbourne with a
Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching, and is a practicing primary
school music teacher. Music has been an important part of her life,
and she enjoys her career where she shares and passes on this
passion and joy. She believes that the key to learning is
engagement and enthusiasm. In every lesson, Claire endeavours to
set a collaborative, positive tone between herself and the student.
Exam preparation is optional. Most of all, she tries to engage with
the student, and make the learning experience fun. This is done
through games, challenges, praise, rewards and always, smiling good
humor.
Piano / Flute
Jess Heard BA/BMus
(Hons), AMusA (flute), completed honours in classical voice at
Monash University. She began her musical training in Kodaly-based
Melbourne choir Young Voices of Melbourne at six years of age, and
shortly afterwards she began piano lessons. She later took up the
flute, and gained both her Associate Diploma in flute through the
Australian Music Examinations Board, as well as majoring in flute
in the undergraudate component of her music course. Following her
choral experience, she recently took up classical singing lessons
and decided to study classical voice for her honours component, as
well as gaining success at competitions while singing, including
reaching the finals for Aria sections in both the Dandenong
Festival of Music and Art for Youth, and Boroondara Eisteddfod.
Jessica has been teaching at Music Works Magic for many years and
loves teaching both piano and flute to adults and children.

Suzuki Flute Trainee. Reidun is completing a degree in Music
Performance at Melbourne University currently studying viola da
gamba (an early bowed stinged instrument) and recorder. She is also
a Suzuki qualified teacher trainee, flute and recorder teacher and
an accomplished cello teacher having many years experience teaching
children and adults. She has been recorded on 3MBS as part of both
Lyre Winds and Gambit and also with the ABC as part of their Sunday
Live program and Rising Stars program. Reidun performs extensively
in Melbourne in early music groups including Consort Eclectus,
Melbourne University Baroque Ensemble, Lyre Winds and Gambit in
addition to having also performed with the Heidelberg Symphony
Orchestra. Reidun has taught at Music Works Magic for many years.
She is a passionate music educator and enjoys enriching the lives
of people through music.

Rachel Mayer has
completed specialised study in string performance, pedagogy,
research and musicology both from The Queensland Conservatorium of
Music Griffith University in Brisbane and Monash University in
Melbourne. In the specialist area of pedagogy she has studied
in depth under Elizabeth Morgan, Fintan Murphy, Kim Bishop and
Marion Stafford. She is passionate about raising the standard
of musical education available in Australia and has published
several articles on string teaching. She has extensive
teaching experience in both Queensland and Victoria and is actively
involved in many fraternities of music. Rachel has
co-ordinated numerous string pedagogy events, examined on student
competition panels and taught at numerous music camps, including
State Honours Ensemble Program Griffith University. Rachel is
currently a Suzuki Teacher in training and has completed specialist
study for teaching our precious younger years students.

Aviva
Kalman, A. Mus. A. (cello) has played cello since the
age of 4. Beginning as a Suzuki student, she studied with Qin Yu
Qin and attained her A. Mus. A. Diploma accreditation through the
Australian Music Examinations Board. Viv plays in a variety of
ensembles and performs in a solo capacity whenever the opportunity
arises. She believes that developing a beautiful tone is essential
and says that the more her students sing the more in tune their
playing becomes. Viv travelled overseas in 2008 and joined us on
staff again in 2009. Viv also be teaches music to pre-schoolers in
child care centres having completed the our Music Works Magic
intensive training course for teachers.
